I have a flower bed against a low wall. The soil is usally cool and is well drained but once any thing grows abve 30cm/ 12in it%26#039;s in full sun with little wind. Any help please, want summer colour
Plants that like there roots in cool shade, well drained soil and flowers in the sun?
%26quot;Meanolmaw%26quot; has beaten me to the punch..lol. The %26quot;clematis%26quot; is perfect for the conditions you have described. Big beautiful flowers as well. However, with clematis you%26#039;ll need to provide a trellis of some sort for the vines to cling onto as they grow.

Reply:Lilies are another plant that enjoy those conditions, though if there is too much wind they may require some support. If you plan carefully and intermingle some other perennials with them you could have dramatic color all season. Lilies are one of those wonderful plants that look elegant and difficult but which actually require almost nothing from you.
Frankly your conditions don%26#039;t sound extreme enough to really limit your plant choices all that much. Many tough old-fashioned perennials will put up with alot if they get a good shot of sun. I don%26#039;t know your climatic conditions but odds are that things like Tall Garden Phlox, Coneflower, Bee-balm, Rudbeckia and the like would do just fine. Most annuals would probably work fine too.
